Title: Stray
Pairing: Dean/Sam
Rating: R
Summary: Sam has a small taste of what could have been.
Author's Notes: The eighth installment of my Werewolf 'Verse. Because this is AU I've been playing around with the whole timeline and Sam's abilities. Please review.
Disclaimer: Everything Supernatural related belongs to Eric Kripke and the CW. Lucky bastards.
Most of my information came from Werewolves Powers and Werewolves

Dean’s stomach felt like it dropped into his feet when Sam found their next hunt.

A poltergeist in the Stanford dorms, Palo Alto California.

“Someone else can handle it, Sam,” he said. He acted like the name meant nothing to him, not taking his eyes off the small, crappy television in their motel room. Dean very well knew that it was one of the schools his brother had applied to.

Sam gaped at him. Dean never turned down a hunt. “Someone else? Dean, no. We’re handling this.” He paused. “I’m going so you’re either coming or you’re not.”

Dean’s attention snapped to him so fast that his neck cracked. He glared at his brother. “Not funny, asshole. You want a replay of last time?”

“There’s no hunters, Dean. Just the regular poltergeist.”

“You‘re not going alone.”

Sam held back his smile. He knew the ‘I‘ll-leave-you-behind’ threat would work.

“Great! So then we’ll head out in the morning.”

Dean grumbled under his breath at Sam’s cheerful tone. “Tell me about this poltergeist, then.”

Sam pulled their hunting journal from his duffle bag. He and Dean had started using it when they struck out on their own. It looked a lot like John’s favored journal.

“Her name was Sandy Parker,” he said. “She was a nineteen year old student staying in the dorms. In nineteen eighty-six she committed suicide by jumping out a window. Now every year, it happens to other girls around the same age.”

The trip to California felt too short for Dean’s liking, and to his disappointment they were not distracted by any other potential hunts on the way. Sam was determined to do this with the knowledge that Dean would follow.

When they reached their destination, Sam couldn’t get out of the Impala fast enough. He stood staring at the school with a look of awe upon his face.

“Snap out of it,” Dean said, smacking Sam on the back a little harder than necessary. “You’re starting to drool.”

“Shut up, Dean. I am not,” Sam muttered, making a show of sweeping the back of his hand over his chin.

Dean rolled his eyes and started toward the dorm building. Sam followed at a slower pace, looking at everything around them. The students bustled by with books in their arms and bags slung over their shoulders. Professors in suits and skirts. The endless amount of windows where lessons and lectures took place.

He’d been so close to coming here, and then Dean took it all away. Sam didn’t blame him, though. He understood Dean’s actions. Besides it wasn’t as if his brother knew about Sam’s ambitions. How could he? Sam hadn’t gotten a chance to bring it up before the night that Dean had come back into his life after three agonizing days and everything changed.

“This took place in the girls’ dorm, right?” Dean asked, looking interested for the first time since Sam brought this particular hunt up.

“Yes. No hitting on the girls, Dean.”

“C’mon, Sam. Don’t take away all my fun.”

“You just do it to piss me off.”

“’Cause the sex is so much better when you’re mad at me,” Dean sang, doing his imitation of Hinder’s Get Stoned.

Sam smacked him on the back of the head.

Their story was that they were writing an article called the Ghosts of California and were investigating the legend surrounding the school. It was an old story they‘d used many times before, but it almost always worked.

They always found that more people were willing to talk when under the impression they would be quoted in a paper or magazine.

Sam sighed, rubbing at his forehead in a vain attempt to stop the impending headache he was feeling right behind his eyes. He’d been searching his laptop in a nearby coffee shop while Dean continued with the interviews. They weren’t getting very far, and the only reason his brother had volunteered to continue was because of the women salivating over him while they told their supposed stories.

“Um.. Excuse me?”

Sam looked up at the blonde woman he hadn‘t even noticed standing next to his table. He gave her a tired smile. “Can I help you?”

“I think so,” she said. “My name is Jess Moore. Aren’t you one of the men inquiring about the ghost, Sandy?”

Nodding, Sam gestured for her to have a seat. “I‘m Sam. What can you tell me about her?”

“Not much, I don’t think,” Jess said, twirling one of her curls around her finger nervously. “I’ve… I’ve seen her. My dorm window is the one she jumped from.”

Sam sat up straighter at that. He and Dean had been unable to find out which room it had been exactly; no one had really seemed to know. If what Jess said was true, then she’d just made their lives that much easier. “You said you’ve seen her?” he prompted.

“I started at school not that long ago, but even so I just recently moved into that room because my old roommate and I didn’t quite get along. The very first night I noticed strange things, like the lights turning on by themselves and the closet door opening. I thought it was electric problems and bad hinges. Then the other night, I woke up from a dead sleep and she was standing at the end of my bed, just looking at me. I screamed, and my lamp flew off my dresser and smashed against the wall.”

Jess started trembling, and without even thinking Sam handed his coffee over to her. She thanked him in a small voice, taking a sip as she studied the table in front of her.

“You have to understand,” she continued in the same tone, “I’ve never been one to believe in ghosts or things like that. But now…”

“You do.”

“Yes. I know it sounds stupid--”

“No, no,” Sam interjected, “not at all.”

As the two of them continue to talk, Sam moved the conversation away from Sandy because he could see it was just making Jess more upset. She relaxed at the subject of school, and it was refreshing after spending so much time with Dean to meet someone who liked education as much as Sam did. His older brother finished school just fine, but he never had a problem with letting it known how pointless he thought it was.

Jess was studying to be a lawyer, and Sam felt a small pang of jealousy.

“I wanted to go to school for that too,” he said, remembering all the applications he’d filled out in secret.

“What stopped you?”

“My family came first.” It was as close to the truth as he was willing to get with her.

Jess nodded in understanding. “It’s tough sometimes. I know how important family is.”

They shared a smile.

Dean was pacing the motel room restlessly by the time Sam got back. “Where the hell have you been? I‘ve been back for over an hour!”

“Calm down, Dean. I was just talking to Jessica Moore.”

“Who the fuck is Jessica Moore?” Dean’s voice was thick with jealousy and suspicion. He growled as Sam kept his back to him, putting his computer away. Dean grabbed him by the shoulders and spun him around, then shoved him down onto the bed. “I said, who is Jessica Moore,” he demanded, straddling the younger man’s waist and pinning his shoulders down.

Sam tried to buck him off. “For God’s sake, Dean! She’s lives in the dorm that Sandy jumped from!”

Dean’s eyes narrowed. “And that’s all?”

“No. I dragged her into the alley behind the coffee shop and fucked her against the wall,” Sam deadpanned. “She sucked me then I fucked her again.”

Dean’s angered snarl was Sam’s only warning before his brother’s teeth sank into his neck. Sam cried out at the sharp pain, the sting soothed by Dean’s warm tongue after. The mark of possession went straight to Sam’s dick, which hardened against the zipper of his jeans.

“Don’t joke about shit like that,” Dean hissed in his ear. “You’re mine, Sammy.” He grabbed his brother’s erection, “This is mine to taste, to suck. Mine to touch. No one else’s. Say you’re mine!”

“I’m yours, Dean,” Sam gasped, his hips trying to thrust. “My body, my heart, everything.”

Satisfied, Dean’s harsh touch turned soothing. He kissed Sam’s mouth with a tenderness he usually saved for the afterglow or first thing in the morning.

Dean never said the words, but Sam knew this was his brother’s way of saying he loved him. Those feelings where why he turned him.

Sam let his fingers slid through Dean’s short hair. He got the message loud and clear.

Jess yawned and rubbed at her eyes, three law books open in front of her. There was so much she had to learn, and although she was enjoying every minute sometimes it felt like so much.

The blonde let her mind wander to Sam. She smiled as she pictured his face, remembering the way his handsome features had lit up as she mentioned studying to be a lawyer. It had been his dream, too, just like hers. He’d said that his family had come first, but should that mean he’d never start college? Family was great but they shouldn’t rule every decision should they?

Feeling a sudden chill, Jess looked up and froze. Sandy Parker was standing there looking at her with an expressionless face. Her own blonde hair hung down around her young, blood-stained face.

Jess wanted to scream, but when she opened her mouth no sound came out.

Sandy’s eyes traveled passed her, and there was a soft whoosh as the far wall as the window slid open. Jess’ body moved of it’s own volition, and she suddenly found herself in front of the window.

“No, please,” she sobbed as she started to climb out, finding her voice. Jess tried to will herself to grab onto the sill, to stop herself, but her body wouldn’t listen as if it wasn‘t even hers.

She closed her eyes, tears flowing down her cheeks, and took the plunge.

Jess had just started falling when a hand snagged her wrist. Her body her own again, she looked up into green eyes.

“It’s okay, I’ve got you!” He reached for her other hand, and Jess gave it with a relieved sob. As soon as she was back inside, Sam yanked her to the floor. “Get down!”

Objects of all shapes and sizes started flying at them with brutal force. Sam protected Jess’s smaller body with his own, pulling her by her hand to duck behind the sofa.

Jess screamed every time glass and ceramic smashed, her arms over her head. Sam held her close, ducking them as best he could from flying kitchenware and textbooks. They were bathed in darkness as a mug took out the ceiling light. Picture frames flew off the shelves to crash to pieces around them.

Everything stopped short as Sandy suddenly froze, then screamed and burst into a ball of flames that disappeared into thin air as if she had never been. Sam released Jess from his arms, and helped her climb to her feet.

“What happened?” she asked, looking at the mess on the floor warily like it was going to jump up and attack her again.

Sam smiled. “Dean.” He knew his brother would find the grave fine on his own.

Sam watched in the passenger side mirror as Stanford got smaller and smaller. He could almost still see Jess standing in front of it, watching them drive away.

“You could stay,” Jess offered. I’m sure they could work something out since you applied here.”

Sam smiled a little wistfully at the idea, shaking his head. “It’s not where I belong, I know that now.”

“What kind of future is out there for you then, Sam?”

Sam looked over his shoulder to where Dean was waiting on the other side of the Impala, watching his brother silently over the hood. Sam’s expression was happy as he focused back on the blonde woman in front of him.

“The only future I need. Take care of yourself, Jess.”

Once settled in a motel room for the night, Sam and Dean lay together on the single bed. Sam’s head was resting on Dean’s chest, listening to the powerful beating of his lover’s heart.

“Sam..” Dean started, and his brother lifted his head to look at him, “I..”

The knock on the door cut off anything Dean was about to say, and the two exchanged a glance before Sam got up. As soon as he opened the door, Dean released an angry growl at the sight of their visitor.

John smiled at them. “Hello, boys.”

Loved possessive Dean. Trust Sam to meet Jess and get friendly but at least he knows he belongs to Dean and only Dean.

Is John good news or bad? Last time he wanted to kill them.

Looking foward to more.
kiraynnkiraynn on July 21st, 2007 07:52 pm (UTC)
I doubt Jess would have objected to more but Sam knows his place in one way or another. lol ;) John has very specific intentions in mind xD

Ok, I just discovered this series and read each one and I really wish I had something more intelligent so say other than WOW! but honestly you've mushed my brain with this hotness. I love possessive!Dean and you deliver him so well. And Sammy is just the best beta ever! I can't wait to see where you go with the reappearance of John and I'm wondering what it was that Dean was going to say. Sam doesn't think that Dean knew about his ambitions to go to college.....this is going to get very interesting I just know it! Do you mind if I friend you? I don't want to take a chance on missing an update.

death wish.

You so do not want to be on Dean's bad side especailly if he thinks it's going to threaten Sammy.

Loved it and Dean was going to tell him to wasn't he?
